Told in the words of Native American storytellers from many nations, these tales use the trickster to teach moral lessons and explain such natural events as how the rabbit got its puffy tail, why the buzzard has no feathers on its head, why the owl guards burial sites or why geese fly in a V formation. Relying on cunning and craft to survive, outwit and amuse, the tricksters include coyote, raven, rabbit, raccoon, wolf, beaver and dog as well as human tricksters like Moshup, Ishjinki and Waynaboozhoo. Each tale is illustrated by a different artist in strikingly different styles, some comic and some realistic but all surprisingly suited to their stories, while the graphic sequencing provides action and emotional detail only suggested by the storyteller. Packaged in a chunky, square-shaped volume, this unique collection of Native American folklore invites readers to sample and savor each colorful, wily tale. Often, the trickster, while trying to take the lazy way, outwits himself, especially when it involves Coyote. In other tales, Raven does whatever people tell him not to do, but ends up with a free meal anyway, and Rabbit tricks some buffalo and wolves and is tricked by Fox into losing his tail. Many of the stories, some of which involve tribespeople as well as animals, are told through captions, as though listening to an elder and envisioning the images he describes. Micah Farritor’s art in "Coyote and the Pebbles" and Dembicki’s in "Azban (Raccoon) and the Crayfish" are standouts in their animal images. The diverse styles are presented in lavish color in this thick, handsome volume. The short collection of contributor bios at the end is a helpful resource for finding more about the artists’ credits or the writers’ heritage.

School Library Journal (May 2010):
(Starred review)
More than 40 storytellers and cartoonists have contributed to this original and provocative compendium of traditional folklore presented in authentic, colorful, and engaging sequential art. The stories are drawn from a variety of Native peoples across North America, and so the trickster character appears variously as Rabbit, a raccoon, Coyote, and in other guises; landscapes, clothing and rhythms of speech and action also vary in keeping with distinct traditions. Realistic, impressionistic, painterly, and cartoon styles of art are employed to echo and announce the tone of each tale and telling style, making this a rich visual treasure as well as cultural trove. Contributors include well-known author Joseph Bruchac, Pueblo storyteller Eldrena Douma, cartoonist and Smithsonian Institution employee Evan Keeling, and many who have not worked in comics heretofore as well as cartoonists with no previous allegiance to telling Native stories with their art. The total package is accessible, entertaining, educational, inspiring, and a must-have for all collections.

Booklist (American Library Association, May 2010):
(Starred review)
This graphic-format collection of Native American tales featuring an old folk favorite—the trickster—hits an impressive trifecta of achievements. First, it’s a wildly successful platform for indie-comic creators and an excellent showcase for their distinctive styles. From David Smith and Jerry Carr's heroic, animation-inspired “Trickster and the Great Chief” to the Looney Toons zaniness of “Rabbit’s Chocktaw Tail Tale” by Tim Tingle and Pat Lewis, there’s a bit of visual panache here for every taste. Second, with the exception of a stray X-Man or two and an obscure DC sword-and-sorcery character, this is the first graphic novel to really focus on Native American themes and events, a surprising absence that this book remedies with respect and imagination. Lastly, as Native American folklore is so directly tied to the culture’s spirituality, this proves the rare graphic novel that handles such issues without specifically attaching them to standard religious practices. With stories that vary in emotional tone, matching the ever-shifting appearance and character of the trickster himself and the lessons he teaches and learns, this collection is an ideal choice for dipping into over and over. I’m not generally a big fan of folk tales, but the writing and the art really shine in this lively compilation. The stories are all written by Native American storytellers, so the tales are authentic, and the art is varied but always of high quality. I gave this book the ultimate test recently—I read one of the stories aloud to a class of fifth-graders—and they loved it. (The fact that the story was about a rabbit whose butt got stuck to a frozen lake probably helped.) The book is beautifully produced and a great read.”

'Trickster' previewed @ Graphic Novel Reporter

The Graphic Novel Reporter offers a sneak peek at a few Trickster pages.

Brief review by GoodReads.com

Tiny Librarian from GoodReads.com says: "Great collection of 21 Native American tales. He disrupts the order of things, often humiliating others and sometimes himself. In Native American traditions, the trickster takes many forms, from coyote or rabbit to raccoon or raven. The first graphic anthology of Native American trickster tales, Trickster brings together Native American folklore and the world of comics.

n Trickster, more than twenty Native American tales are cleverly adapted into comic form. Each story is written by a different Native American storyteller who worked closely with a selected illustrator, a combination that gives each tale a unique and powerful voice and look. Ranging from serious and dramatic to funny and sometimes downright fiendish, these tales bring tricksters back into popular culture in a very vivid form. From an ego-driven social misstep in "Coyote and the Pebbles" to the hijinks of "How Wildcat Caught a Turkey" and the hilarity of "Rabbit's Choctaw Tail Tale," Trickster provides entertainment for readers of all ages and backgrounds.

Here's a little plug for the book on My3Books.com.

Trickster will hit the book shelves in June, but you can get your copy ahead of time at the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo in Columbus, Ohio, and Festival Image in Washington,D.C./Baltimore, both in April.

Thompson on 'Avatar'

Trickster contributing writer Michael Thompson discusses parallels between the blockbuster film "Avatar" and Native Americans--and why it isn't about Native Americans. We talked about working together on a project but he first had to serve his time in the military. Below are the roughs for the first two pages of the story.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KxKR-_oc4KA/SGESly12yMI/AAAAAAAAAeI/J0OTklD8On8/s400/page1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215470283983866050" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KxKR-_oc4KA/SGESmEnTZiI/AAAAAAAAAeQ/5rANGmTCTtk/s400/page2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215470288754664994" />

Kudos to Michael Thompson!

Last week, Trickster contributor Michael Thompson received the top award for magazine featurewriting from the Society of National Association Publications for an article he wrote for the Tribal College Journal ("Honoring the "Word" was the title of the piece.) D.C. cartoonist Andrew Cohen took the naughty-but-playful little characters and had some fun incorporating them into the layout--having them sneak from behind panels, throw things from one panel to another, etc. Below is one page from their story illustrating that point.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KxKR-_oc4KA/SEbWNE_vhnI/AAAAAAAAAdI/vrIb4aUP2hk/s400/andrew1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208085539268298354" />

"Coyote and the Pebbles"

Here's anther page from storyteller Dayton Edmond's and artist Micah Farritor's "Coyote and the Pebbles." He has been a teacher, writer and occasional community activist in Georgia, Kansas, California and New Mexico. He and his wife, Tina Deschenie (Dine'/Hopi), have made numerous presentations on contemporary Native literature at state and national conferences. The story he provided, "Rabbit and the Tug of War," was adapted from the W. O. Next, Jake will ink it, color it and then letter it electronically.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KxKR-_oc4KA/SCnd275y0-I/AAAAAAAAAck/fIIfDoB5IiM/s400/tugofwarthumb3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5199931180638720994" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KxKR-_oc4KA/SCnd3b5y0_I/AAAAAAAAAcs/t0iJuFOCi3A/s400/tugofwar3.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5199931189228655602" />

When Your Hands Are Tied

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KxKR-_oc4KA/SClmUr5y09I/AAAAAAAAAcc/NdR4EhEP-Js/s400/hands.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5199799750344496082" />

This is a DVD that I came across in my research for the Trickster project. "When Your Hands Are Tied" has nothing to do with tricksters. It's an incredibly compelling, award-winning documentary that focuses on how young Native Americans are expressing themselves in today's world while keeping strong traditional lives. It made me feel sympathy and inspiration (and prompted me to do some self-examining). It's a great educational tool.

For more information, visit whenyourhandsaretied.org. What's unique is that he used original source material for many of the stories, either written or recorded. Roy, who served 32 years on his tribe's council, permitted us to use "The Dangerous Beaver," as told by family friend Mary Eyley in 1928. He's researching various aspects of the story right now--proper clothing for the area, how certain rock and land formations look--but he did this quick sketch of Moshup when he learned he was pairing with Jonathan. I really like this drawing because with just a few quick lines, Chris conveys the power of Moshup in the context of the setting.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KxKR-_oc4KA/R7_zZxfSpYI/AAAAAAAAAXY/55LmjQAYaOE/s400/Moshup-idea-01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5170118521351480706" />

"Ishjinki and Buzzard" Updated

Dimi Macheras, who is illustrating Jimm Goodtracks's telling of "Ishjinki and Buzzard," is fleshing out his drawing for the story. Jimm works on the Baxoje Jiwere Language Project, which is really interesting, so be sure to check out its site. (It also has an extensive bio of Jimm, which itself is very interesting.)

Artist Dimi Macheras, who recently transplanted from Alaska to Seattle, is rendering the story. Dimi illustrated the wonderful Strong Man comic, which offers a modern-day telling of the Tlingit tale. It was funded by the Association of Alaska School Boards. His music is in the folk genre, blending acoustic and steel guitars, some flute and some wonderful lyrics. One of his latest projects, the children's book When Turtle Grew Feathers, which is based on the traditional Choctaw folktale of Rabbit racing Turtle, has received enthusiastic reviews and great responses from reading audiences.

Pat is an artist who is gaining much attention in the comics world. His wonderfully fun monsters graphic novel called "The Claws Came Out" was just released by IDW Publishing. For Tim's story, Pat is using an old-school animation style that's reminiscent to the great Tex Avery and his contemporaries. It's one of the stories I can't wait for people to read, but I don't want to give away too much beforehand. Pared with Greg to do the art is Mike Short from Northern Virginia. Mike sent along a sketch (below) for the story. Sketch?! It's worthy of standing alone as a wonderful piece of art! Keep an eye out for some great breakdowns of the story forthcoming!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KxKR-_oc4KA/R4z7qTX8yPI/AAAAAAAAAVA/74PlFXtTRLQ/s400/rabbit-flowers.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5155772377606179058" />

"How Alligator Got His Brown Skin"

I really enjoy animal trickster stories that explain why certain animals look or act the way they do. Storyteller Joyce Bear weaves a tale about a crafty rabbit and a crusty mean alligator, who actually has skin that's the envy of all the animals. Megan Beahr, who has a wonderfully fresh, cartoony style in her comics, is illustrating the story. Sometimes stories are predictable because you've heard them many times or stories similar to them. Not this one. "Raven the Trickster" has plenty of turns that will keep you gluded to the page. For this story, I called on my Canadian colleague Jason Copland. I've followed Jason's work for a few years now and finally had the pleasure of working with him on a story for the Postcards anthology. He's such a dedicated and wonderful artist that I had to try to bring him into the project and this seemed like a good fit. And I lucked out: He was interested and had some time!

Below is what's called a "rough" page drawn by Jason for John's story. (It's like a storyboard for movies where you get the general things down to make sure they work before you render the final product.)

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KxKR-_oc4KA/R4Z4ijX8yNI/AAAAAAAAAUs/P2zD6YUrWn4/s400/ravenrough_pg1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5153939358578690258" />

"Puapualenalena, Wizard Dog of Waipi`o Valley"

The "Trickster" book is a broad-reaching one, covering many geographic areas and many trickster forms. Perhaps the most exotic story in the anthology is "Puapualenalena, Wizard Dog of Waipi`o Valley" by Thomas Cummings Jr., a cultural educator at the Bishop Museum in Hawai'i. It is a Hawai'ian legend about a magical quest where the Wizard Dog takes on demons to recover a stolen item. Paul Zdepski, an inspiring professional artist from Northern Virginia, is rendering the story. He's using a slightly different approach to illustrating the story by drawing each piece separately on a computer and then laying each panel out on a page. Below are a few sketches of some of the characters for the story.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KxKR-_oc4KA/R4TaNTX8yMI/AAAAAAAAAUk/3040PUuZuDs/s400/oldman_firelight.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5153483795692570818" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KxKR-_oc4KA/R4PXKzX8yKI/AAAAAAAAAUU/Rcnd41nV5Zc/s400/uhane_hula_web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5153198979231303842" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KxKR-_oc4KA/R4PXLDX8yLI/AAAAAAAAAUc/0ErjPgxxdrw/s400/uhane_radial_72.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5153198983526271154" />

"Mink and Wolf"

Native American storytelling is an oral tradition. Although I appreciated the concept of verbally telling the story, I didn't see too much difference between writing and telling it. And then I heard Elaine Grinnell tell the story of "Mink and Wolf." She dictated the story to me over the phone and I was simply captivated. The inflections in her voice, the passion for the story, the humor--all of it made the story spring to life much more than words on paper. I looked for an artist for Elaine's story who had the same kind of energy. The first time I saw Michelle Silva's work was in a previous nature-based graphic novel that I did. Michelle did a wonderful pin-up of the main character, a snapping turtle called Mr. Big. I liked the energy of the drawing and looked at Michelle's other work, which included a wide array of topics and styles. I think you'll agree her illustration (below) for Elaine's story is captivating.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KxKR-_oc4KA/R4Ni2TX8yJI/AAAAAAAAAUM/-lOF-w-vTPA/s400/minkandwolf2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5153071083695163538" />

"Coyote and the Pebbles"

Dayton Edmond--storyteller, artist and all-around wonderful entertainer--crafted the story of "Coyote and the Pebbles." It's my favorite page because of the action in the story and the some of the panel angles.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KxKR-_oc4KA/R35JhjX8yGI/AAAAAAAAATw/sbSuh6BUWqc/s400/trickster06_Web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5151635864538630242" />

Welcome!

This blog is dedicated to the upcoming Trickster comics anthology, which is scheduled for release this fall from Little Foot Comics. The project comprises about 20 trickster tales as told by Native American storytellers from around the country. The stories range from the well-known tricksters, such as the coyote, to less-known tricksters, like the raccoon. The stories will be illustrated in color by some of today's best comic-book illustrators.

Aside from posting news, sketches and other tidbits related to the project, this blog is also dedicated to promoting projects to preserve the Native American culture. All the participating storytellers--and many of the accompanying artists--are involved in such efforts and we'd like to promote those works here as well.
